R. Stevens Harris is an award-winning filmmaker and self-trained artist. With influences ranging from David Lynch to Hans Bellmer, Harris strives with each canvas to combine clear composition with spontaneous, organic energy. Recent works are combinations of paint, charcoal and ink over a base of collage, creating a tactile, rustic effect – as if the paintings were exhumed from the earth and polished clean. Though he prefers to avoid convenient description, this series suggests a fading sense of self, as if the subjects within the paintings were ghosts or shells or puppets remembered, blending or disappearing into their artificial backgrounds. He currently lives in Los Angeles, where he makes films, stretches canvases and harbors thoughts about the modern state of affairs.

The lack of symmetry . . .
MAKES MY WORLD GO ROUND
Thing(s): Hand-lit fireplaces, eyeless dance floors and hours yet unspent; zipping down the shoreline after midnight in a thunder-engine convertible with my head on fire and laughing at the wind.
