ABOUT

I build mythologies with my costuming. Each outfit is a dark fable woven together with aspects of the model's self and both mythic and psychological symbolism. I begin each mask directly on the wearer's face. This gives me a chance to become familiar with both personality and bone structure. When the mask is complete, I build the costume as an extension. I am driven to illuminate dark aspects of ourselves in a gently alarming, yet alluring way. I work obsessively on my masks and costumes until I feel that they are perfectly complete and yet still raw. I am rewarded by seeing my models excitedly rise to the challenge of portraying these characters onstage. Specific themes are of interest to me in my work, including pregnancy, birth, aging, the subconscious, the ocean, and primal mythologies. My most recent runway collection addresses the psychological and societal effect of c-sections, projected into a future time where it is the only practiced means of birth. I have created costumes for a handful of runway shows, theater productions, and bands. I currently build costumes and props for Big Hammer Theory, a djent metal band out of Eugene, and study Theater Costuming, Art, and Psychology at the University of Oregon. I am a happily married mother of three brilliant girls. Please feel free to contact me at rhiannondark@yahoo.com or rhiannondark@facebook.com.
