ABOUT

Painting for me is not something that came so naturally, as one may expect. Although now, the act of painting provides an outlet for all ranges of emotion, it was not long ago that I didn’t even consider it as an option. It was only when I came to college that I began to explore my options with media, and found that painting offered a much wider selection than that of a simple pencil or a stick of charcoal. The way paint can be manipulated and changed with the different mediums offered up a whole new world of possibilities, and the thought of learning and using all of them became not only feasible, but exciting. Since then, I’ve declared a concentration in painting, and I’m beginning to establish work that can really achieve the aesthetic and emotion that I’m trying to portray. The process of a painting for me is every bit as important as the final result. And without knowing and seeing the process in the final work, I feel as though it is lost. Because of that, most of my pieces begin unplanned, and are often reworked or changed completely. One of the goals in my work is to be able to see the history on the surface; to truly see what went in to the painting, whether it be my own emotion, or the physical materials I used. While my color palette is somewhat muted, the voice of my work is not. And I believe the more I work and grow, the louder my pieces are becoming. While this is true, I’ll never be truly happy with something I create, which I feel is a good thing. More of my work can be found at http://RyanSeverance.com

FAVORITE THING ABOUT RAW

RAW is a seemingly excellent outlet for newer artists looking for a professional grade of exposure and an exciting social experience in itself. I look forward to learn and experience more with the upcoming RAW showcases.
