Accessories – Melbourne

Just how versatile could a cube be? This is the concept behind the range of jewellery work by Aimee Sutanto. This Melbourne-based Indonesian contemporary jeweller, delves in the deconstruction and reconstruction of cube forms. Her earlier pieces are simple construction of cubes. Having felt not maximizing their full potential, she deconstructed and modified, reconstructing the cubes into new shapes and forms. Though sterling silver is a traditional material for jewellery, her approach in her work is quite the opposite: instead of designing on paper, she works directly with the cubes, manipulating and juxtaposing them into a final form. This instinctive process of constant observation of the inherent quality of the cubes resulted in forms that are otherwise difficult to achieve; often familiar, yet beguiling. Aside from this, she also works on a more whimsical range \"Emoticon\" and the amporphous patterns of neo-classical \"New Baroque\" pieces. Aimee Sutanto is a Melbourne-based independent jeweller, working predominantly in sterling silver and gold. Her background in Bachelor of Fine Art from Monash University formed a strong foundation in the aesthetic and conceptual approach to her work. She currently works from her studio in Melbourne.
