Alexandra Malpass

Fashion – Sydney

Alexandra Malpass has recently graduated as an Honours student of Fashion and Textiles at UTS. Alexandra Malpass aims to push the boundaries of textiles in fashion - to create something that brings a point of difference to an industry flooded with print and textile manipulations. She wants her work to be uncompromising, direct and deviant with no detail unconsidered. Her graduate collection, Numinous, aims to explore the hidden depths of the human psyche - the inherent attraction to decay. Numinous reflects a deep exploration into decay\'s visual and conceptual properties; silhouettes billow, seams are disguised, fabric ends fraying and unraveling as they continue to wear. All pieces have had an application of one of three unique and innovative rusting techniques developed by Alexandra. Fabric has been destroyed through stone washing and heat applications, treated with rust through mediums or iron filings, buried and oxidised to become the individual and one off pieces they are. The pieces are quite literally rusting away on the body. This holds a confronting and significant emotional exploration for many, as death is engrained into the garments as soon as they\'re conceived.
