Amaris Dance

Performing Art – New York - NYC

Alexandra Amirov Born in The Caucus Mountains of Russia and raised in Israel. As a teenager, Alex studied at Tsizapers, the leading ballroom dance school in Israel, and fell in love with performing. After relocating to NYC, Alex joined the Eddie Torres Latin Dance Company and performed with them until 2011. Alex then received a scholarship to obtain her BA/MA Degree in Dance Education at Hunter College, CUNY. Upon her graduation, she was awarded the “Excellence in Choreography” award from Hunter College in 2013. At Hunter Alex began to choreograph, and her focus is now on that aspect of dance and performance. The unique and powerful voice she demonstrates springs from her diverse cultural background and training in modern, ballet, latin and ballroom techniques. Drawing from traditional folk dance, religious rituals, social dancing, post-modern and contemporary styles, Alex creates multidisciplinary, risk-taking works that explore a variety of themes. In her choreography, Alex considers the manipulation of light, sound, the stage environment and movement as equally important. Her works range from minimal productions where the lighting elements are controlled by the dancers, to complex productions involving close collaborations with the performance space, that take the audience on a journey of discovery. Alex founded Amaris Dance in 2012. Her first choreography, Black Cuts Body, received the “Directors Choice” award from the Gowanus Art Center in NYC. In Fall 2013, Alex choreographed a feature film/musical, Thirsty, slated for release in 2014. Alex has been teaching dance since 2005. * Photos: Whitney Browne.
