ART: BECS

Drawing much inspiration from his childhood and the urban landscapes surrounding his life, artist BECS talks to RAW about his work. See his paintings on display at the next Hollywood Showcase at Cinespace on Thursday, September 2nd!

Tell us about yourself and how you first got started making art?
I am an L.A. native. I grew on the streets of the San Gabriel Valley. I didn't come from a lot of money but I would not change my childhood for anything, it is what has made me who I am today. I am just someone who is very passionate about art and creating it. As a child, I loved to draw. I would copy images I saw in comics and cartoons. As I got older, I developed my own style. Also Barry McGee's art influenced me a lot as a kid. Graffiti art had a big impact on me growing up.

How would you describe your aesthetic?
I like to create odd and unusual characters.

From where do you draw inspiration for your work?
Inspiration from my art definitely comes from music, it usually sets the tone/mood of my session. I also get a lot of inspiration from animals and nature books as well as graffiti art.

What do you love most about what you do?
I love that I am able to create the visions/ideas that I have in my head down on paper or canvas without any force.

Medium of choice?
Acrylic and Aerosol

Are there any artists or art movements, past or present, that strongly inform and influence your work?
Barry McGee, Salvador Dali, and Robert Rauschenberg strongly inform and influence my work.

Any previous exhibitions/collaborations that you are particularly proud of?
I work with an artist name Image and we collaborate on making shirts from our art that we create.

Any accomplishments/goals you hope to achieve as an artist in the future?
I would like to get my degree in graphic and design, so I can get a job doing what I love most - Art.

Why showcase at RAW?
RAW is a big supporter of unknown artists of all forms of art and I definitely appreciate that.

Favorite thing to do outside of your craft?
I like bicycling, being outdoors with mother nature, driving into the city to look at the landscapes, and spending time with my wife and kids.

Any current rising stars within the art arena that you would recommend we look out for?
