ART: S.R. Wexler

Published in RAW Features

Stacey Wexler always had a knack for keeping herself entertained by drawing and creating dramatic dioramas for puppet stories as a child. Her mom kept her in an ample supply of paper, crayons and cardboard boxes that would become pop-up books, puppet theaters and endless amounts of cards. Originally from New Jersey, her talent for visual storytelling takes her on the path towards a career in art. Constantly, involved in art classes throughout high school taking everything from ceramics to painting. Ms. Wexler received her Bachelors of Fine Art in ceramics from The University for the Arts in 1983.

During her time in college she was the recipient of several awards for artistic achievements. Moving across country to continue her education she graduates from Claremont Graduate University with a Masters of Fine Art in sculpting in 1983. Of course not all her time is spent making art. Another one of Ms. Wexler's passions is travel. She has combined her love of exotic lands with art by applying and receiving residencies in Italy, Canada, and most recently Hungary. Although, Ms. Wexler studied psychology in college with the intentions of becoming an art therapist, after graduating she entered into the entertainment industry producing sets and props for twenty years.

She counts her influences by artists Marlene Dumas, William Kentridge and listens to music by Modest Mouse or the Shins while she works.  Ms. Wexler continues to be interested in psychology and volunteers at the Harbor View House, which is a facility that helps people with mental disabilities.  She is currently is working with them on a suicide prevention project "Picking Up the Pieces" which will be shown in downtown Los Angles in October. Ms Wexler is represented by The House Gallery in Salt Lake City, Utah.
