Charles Woodruff Coates

Visual Art – San Jose

Charles Woodruff Coates holds a Masters of Fine Arts degree from the University of Arizona School of Art in Printmaking, and a Bachelors of Fine Arts degree in Sequential Art from Savannah College of Art and Design. Coates draws from classical imagery such as greek sculptures and gothic cathedrals and relates them to contemporary notions of perfection. Sculptures and cathedrals act as metaphors for our own bodies and spiritual mindsets, and likewise are portrayed not as ideal, but with an emphasis on imperfection. Coates has exhibited artwork internationally in Bratislava, Slovakia, and Bangalore, India, as well as juried exhibitions in the United States including The North American Boston Print Biennial and the Atlanta Print Biennial. Coates currently lives in San Jose, California.
