David Hampton

Visual Art – Newcastle

David is a printmaker and illustrator with a fascination for steam locomotives and maritime melodramas. His work is inspired by a lost world of metal leviathans and reckless engineers. Drawing inspiration from ghost stories and elderly engineering magazines his work renders old-fashioned marvels in scrimshaw detail. Born in Newcastle in 1988, he began studying Fine Art at Newcastle University 17 years later. During his studies he was offered a studio space through Renew Newcastle, worked for the student art gallery- Watt Space and participated in exhibitions across Newcastle. Since graduating with honours in 2011 David has exhibited at Cessnock and Maitland Regional Art Galleries, assisted in curating ‘Railway Portraits-the photography of Robert and Bruce Wheatley’ at Newcastle Museum, and produced an installation of his prints onto a full sized operation steam locomotive
