D\'NAE
Visual Art – Philadelphia
I am a 23 year old Southwest Philadelphia native, and recent graduate from The Pennsylvania State University, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree with a concentration in New Media.
Through my work, I aim to create a relationship between Oil painting and New Media based art by combining the traditional ideas of Oil painting with the unregulated concepts of New Media. My main focus at the moment is exploring multiple ways to translate the ideas of the two worlds and present them together as one. By engaging the two forms of Art, this allows for endless opportunities in terms of themes, and subject matter, as well as aesthetic.
My current work is centered-around story telling through the use of portraits. The variation of color in the portraits range from monochromatic, to flesh tone, to grey scale paintings. Facial expressions in the portraits, as well as color are very important aspects of my work, because I use them to hint at and evoke certain emotions/moods. The expression in the portraits range, based on self-perception of the implied story. The portraits in the foreground are juxtaposed against geometric backgrounds to add another sense of dimension to the paintings.
Another notable and key factor I implement into my work is the deconstruction of the figure by using dynamic graphic elements.
