Fashion – Philadelphia

Michael Thomas was born on June 27th of 1990, and was raised in the Germantown section of Philadelphia. Through his adolescence, he was effected by the artistic works of Andy Warhol, with specified interest in his contributions to fashion photography. The universally relatable narrative quality of the lyrics of Nina Simone, also played a role in inspiring this young artist to tell a story through his own work. When it comes to influential designers, Michael holds the utmost respect for Christian Dior for reinventing the woman’s silhouette, as well as the individualized style of the venerable Cristobal Balenciaga. He feels that both of these designers personify high fashion in a way that makes a woman feel as though she is the only woman in the world. It is Michael’s goal to achieve that same level of impact on the world of design. Though he began sewing at age 15, Michael didn’t consider designing until several years later. He was able to hone his skill at his craft by designing casual wear and prom gowns for his friends. Upon graduation from Ben Franklin High School in June of 2009, he began working full time to raise money for tuition, and by January of 2010, Michael was enrolled in the Fashion Design program at the Art Institute of Philadelphia, where he studies currently. Combining the classic silhouette of Christian Dior’s “New Look” of the 1950’s with a touch of contemporary Hollywood glamour, this collection is a testament to Michael’s acquired knowledge, the development of his technical skill, and it exemplifies his evolving design aesthetic. While reflecting on the work that has gone into this show, this young designer is quoted to have said, “Fashion is like breathing, you inhale your inspiration and you exhale a masterpiece.\"
