I am a visual artist from Morocco. I lived in the United States for the past 6 years. I had the chance to live in both the 'East' and the 'West' which sparked a curiosity in identity and perception, specifically how others perceive and subsequently affect one's self. I try to capture this reciprocal relationship in my Art, whether it is visual or of a different format. I am interested in the figure, its standing with or without its surroundings, and its emotional relevance evoking the romanticist thought.
Being an artist was neither my childhood dream nor my teenage rebellion means. Growing up, I never expected to be making art at some point in my life. I was, however, aware of my ability to draw. In 2005, when I transferred to St Cloud State University to be a Computer Science student, I found out that my major required a minor. Convinced drawing would result in easy A’s, I decided to minor in art. Soon, the minor turned into an “intended major”, and then to a second major. As an undergraduate student, I had the chance to explore my artistic and intellectual abilities. I discovered that art making was something I wanted to pursue, and my curiosity about art grew stronger.
Now, I spend most of my daytime chasing my bi-weekly paycheck in an office setting. The lack of intellectual and artistic stimulation is my motivation to pursue Art. In a way, the absence of Art creates Art. The monotone lifestyle, void of spontaneity and its engendered frustration build up only to be vomited back into the world on a canvas or a piece of paper.
The platform of artistic expression doesn’t always have to be a 2 dimensional plane. I have been working to expand my media horizon to include, 3d work, dance and theater. I am open to new opportunities, suggestions, and collaborative work… hit me up!
