Gilding Primal Instinct lives in a macabre surrealist dreamscape nestled between the worlds of fashion and fine art. The brand, headed by SoHo based metalsmith Danielle Nicole Hills, challenges its wearers to step outside themselves and look at our fundamental nature as a species. Each collection examines different visceral human behaviors that remain constant, despite how highly evolved we become, and translates them into iconic archetypes that inspire a sense of sublime horror. A heavy focus on traditional metalsmithing techniques and a dedication to handmade craftsmanship ensures that every piece is individual and unique. Gilding Primal Instinct brings this all together in an exciting and unsettling combination of elegant forms, theatrical flair, and just a touch of brutality.
Danielle was introduced to metalsmithing at Pratt Institute during her undergraduate career, and completed her BFA in Fine Arts Jewelry. Her Debut collection, titled Gilding Primal Instinct: A Character Study of Societal Inevitability, was released in March 2010 and was comprised of 3 character archetypes represented in one of a kind body adornments. From here she started her company, Danielle Nicole Adornments, LLC, and has recently released a ready to wear line based on the original one of a kinds.
