HAIR&MAKEUP: LINDSAY MCNALLY

See hair stylist Lindsay McNally's work on the runway at the next Long Beach RAW Showcase on Thursday, February 25th!

When did you start styling hair?
I've been doing hair professionally since 2003. However, I've always loved trying new styles on myself and  on my friends. In high school, I did everyone's hair for formal dances and prom. I currently work at an Aveda Salon in Long Beach, called Static.

From where do you draw inspiration for your work?
I draw inspiration from colors and textures on pretty much anything. Art is really inspiring to me; I'm intrigued with how the artist might have created the look and it makes me want to do the same with hair. Fashion is another big inspiration for me. I like to create hair that tells the same story the clothes do.

What do you love most about what you do?
I love that I get to be so creative. Every day, every hour is different. I love talking to people and building relationships with them. The fact that I get to make you look and feel good is a big bonus for me.

When you aren't styling hair, how do you like spending your free time?
I am a huge, and I mean HUGE, Angels baseball fan. So during baseball season, my off-time is consumed with Angels games. I enjoy hanging out with my family and friends as well ... and of course doing the typical 'girl stuff,' like shopping.

What sort of styles do you most like working with?
Creative/ Avante-Garde styles are my favorite, mostly because they allow me use my imagination to the fullest. I get to be as reserved or as funky as I would like. I have full control over the end result. I often start off with one specific image in my head than while working on the hair it changes.

Any previous accomplishments that you are most proud of?
My salon entered NAHA, for best salon team this year. I'm pretty excited with the work that we produced. Its a pretty big deal in the Hair and Makeup world and I'm so proud of my salon team.

Who styles YOUR hair?
Priscilla, one of the stylist I work with, cuts my hair. My hair color is actually natural ... I know, very rare for a hair stylist, but true!

Why showcase at RAW?
There are a few reasons why I decided to showcase at RAW. For a start, I like what RAW stands for. I like how RAW celebrates natural talent while showcasing each talent in a "raw/natural" form by keeping the environment in mind. Also, I feel that RAW can help me further succeed in the beauty industry. I feel that I can learn from the other artists apart of RAW. I'm very excited to be a part of the RAW family.

HAIR&MAKEUP: YVETTE MENDOZA

A freelance makeup artist based out of Orange County and Los Angeles, Yvette Mendoza is very involved in her artistry, telling RAW in a Q&A that she lives and breathes it. RSVP to see her work go down the RAW runway in Fullerton on Thursday, February 18th!

How did you first start as a makeup artist?
I started kind of by accident. A friend of mine happen to be a manager for a pro MAC store. He basically set up the interview and the rest is history. After freelancing for some time I decided to get really serious and enroll in some formal schooling. My thirst for knowledge in the field grew day by day; I basically breathed, ate, lived beauty.

What inspires your artistry?
I draw inspiration from everywhere. Being so visual, it's hard not to be inspired by everything. But if I had to choose, I enjoy looking at British magazines;  they are so ahead of the game. I definitely draw inspiration from life and especially nature, the colors.

What does a typical day look like for you?
My typical day is different from one day to the next. Even though I am a makeup artist, as a business owner, I can start my day by giving a customized facial, or doing a trial run for a blushing bride, or applying lashes to a new or returning client at the salon, or just be called in on a set for a few hours. Life is so unexpected and I love that aspect of my life.

Do you have a style or technique specific to you?
My style would definitely be a sort of classic beauty. I love to bring out the beauty in everyone (although I do love high fashion and runway). The tools I love and can't be with out are definitely my temptu airbrush machine (I don't leave home without it) and of course my brush set; I can't do my job without them.

Are there any makeup artists who influence your work?
Strong influences are around me always. Kevyn Aucoin was a great innovative artist.

Any previous work that you are particularly proud of?
Previous work that I'm proud of would have to be one of my first photoshoots. I will never forget how I felt when I saw the end result. I thought to myself I want to do this forever.

Why showcase at RAW?
That's simple. As artists, we all know how hard it is to get your name out there. So, when you have a production that is out to represent the artist you want to be a part of that 100%.

What do you enjoy doing when you're doing make up?
When I'm not working with makeup, I'm definitely enjoying life. I love to create, whether it's photography, scrapbooking, or putting jigsaw puzzles together ... (yeah, I know; I'm a nerd). And, of course hanging with my loved ones.
