MEILAI

Fashion – San Jose

My sewing machine and a notepad have been my saving grace through my life. When I was a child I was constantly making Barbie clothes and as I got older my obsession of changing clothes I owned into something different that I envisioned. My grandmother and mother were both pretty savvy on the sewing machine and taught me when I was younger how to use one. It opened my eyes to endless possibilities. I knew I wanted to create a line from the moment my foot hit the pedal. When I graduated high school I moved to LA to pursue fashion. I didn\'t’ go to school and instead hit the pavement to grab any opportunity anyone would throw my way. I worked for BCBG and American Apparel as well as a few different small companies. I worked as an assistant to a stylist and later did some freelance styling of my own. I learned so much from all of it, but felt that I needed to create something of my own and translate my vision a little more. I since then decided to create MELAI, Something a little different from the rest. I up cycle clothing and add my own twist to things. I want to resurrect the dead materials into something beautiful and new, a statement piece that is one of a kind. It’s something that you can feel good about wearing due to the up cycle.
