Gentleman Joker

Visual Art – Melbourne

My artworks are made with all different types of mediums. The ones I have specifically shown are digital portraits where I pen tool and vector each little piece. I find a photo/photos and mash them together, using images with large quantities of tone and shadow, that way I can create a varied color palette for each piece. With the vector work, I see each tone as a specific color or shade and adapt my pieces one tone at a time. Some of my pieces are 500 individual shapes and some are 15,000 individual shapes. Each shape is individual, each shape is individually pen tooled using illustrator. I then create patterns and textures using photographs or simple geometries. The application of the textures is the difficult part as the image becomes heavy and condensed. That\'s where the negative background is important. When I paint I start with a blank canvas as always, with no reference I begin to illustrate what resides in my subconscious which is often a spool of rainbow colored lines and distorted faces. As a portrait obsessed artist, I pick a feature and exaggerate it. This is how I characterize my pieces. I take a lot of photos of models. The special thing is that my models are all first timers, I do the shoots for free and i enjoy giving models a leg up. Several of my models have gone on to work for related agencies and I will continue to shoot and help other artists.
