Jay Switlick

Visual Art – Washington, D.C.

Jay is a self-taught artist who uses unconventional techniques to create thought-provoking abstract paintings. Jay's work considers the intersections of various themes common to science, psychology, nature and social justice. A Maryland native and educator by profession, Jay began painting regularly in 2012 as a form of art therapy for anxiety/depression and PTSD, but the hobby quickly grew into a passion. Borrowing from their work as an educator, Jay's experimental style incorporates techniques more often found in a preschool or elementary art room than in a more traditional artist studio to create unique, visually stimulating pieces. Jay's abstract works range in subject matter from themes of social justice & empowerment, and images taken from nature, to forms from the sciences and brain research. Jay currently lives in Washington D.C. with their fiancée, and their 3 cats. A former special education teacher and administrator, Jay currently works as a private childcare provider, while also transitioning their painting into a business venture. Additionally, Jay does occasional work as an education advocate/consultant for DC area families, and as a professional development coach. When they are not painting or working with kids, Jay can be found gardening, spending time with their new nephew, or supporting the resistance.
