Julia D\'Ambrosi

Visual Art – Washington, D.C.

My paintings are about creating interactions. Paint allows me to engage with creatures and worlds that are otherwise out of reach. I expose my subject to the elements of gravity and emotion. I morph the painting but I also let it morph me. I create a dialogue. I love acrylic because of the variety of ways it can be used. A pencil is a faithful servant, but paint is my collaborator. Paint can not only be moved but also set into motion. I tilt paintings and scrape paintings. I carve acrylic labyrinths for ink to run through. I am constantly looking for interesting things to engage with. The deep sea is one of my favorite places to find a muse, but I’m just as willing to look in boxes of antique buttons or a Guatemalan marketplace. I not only paint but also create wire-wrapped jewelry from glass beads and shells. My cardinal rule is to never create apathetically.
