Kay Proudlove

Music – Wollongong

Kay Proudlove is a singer/songwriter armed with an acoustic guitar and a bunch of wordy songs. Taking influence from artists such as Laura Marling, Katie Noonan, Darren Hanlon, Clare Bowditch, Josh Pyke and Ed Sheeran, Kay’s indie folk style is hybridised with a touch of jazz and a hint of musical theatre. Hailing from Wollongong NSW, Kay has recently performed at both The Illawarra Folk Festival (2012, 2013) and the Blue Mountains Music Festival (2013) as well as consistently gigging around Sydney and The Illawarra for the last 6 years. The KP EP (2012) marks Kay\'s debut release featuring songs with a unique take on life\'s mishaps and joys. Whether it be the ironic humour of \'Valentine\'s Day\' or the quiet reflection of \'That\'s How I Know\' chances are Kay\'s songs will bash obnoxiously at your funny bone or tug on your heart strings. The recently released Valentine\'s Day video clip has proved to be a favorite amongst fans old and new, a pleasing result for a day spent filming in her childhood bedroom with a tripod, hand puppet and a $50 budget (most of which was spent on chocolate). The Finding Words collection of songs is gradually being released over the summer of 2013/14 and is the product of Kay\'s Honours research project, which explores the role of songwriting in the articulation of genre. These songs ring true to Kay\'s story telling tendencies. Bringing out emotion in the narrative, these are songs from the heart (tracks available now at www.kayproudlove.bandcamp.com).
