Kira Lee

Fashion – Chicago

Kira Lee Cahill is a Chicago based designer. She lives with her boyfriend, Rokos, her best friend, Atom, and her three darling-rotten cats, Looshkin, Copernicus, and Ursula. She works from her cozy home studio full of towering stacks of old fabric, dusty books, and scattered toys. Kira has always had an interest in design. Growing up, her Aunt Marian made her every dress she owned, and despite Kira’s tomboy demeanor, she wore them exclusively, rolling in the dirt, and mussing them all up. She took sewing classes as a teen, and began experimenting with altering and creating her own looks. From those humble beginnings, her love of design has grown insatiably, to the point of obsession, and has integrated every aspect of her life. Kira just finished her senior thesis collection, at Columbia College Chicago. The collection was based on Maurice Sendak\'s book \"Where the Wild Things Are.\" Now that Kira has graduated from Columbia, she is working on a new collection of garments for Fall 2013, where she is creating most of the prints and fabrications through various methods. The Fall 2013 collection is based off concepts exploring witches and what it means to be on the fringe of society, still holding extreme power and wonder. Kira also opened a vintage store on Etsy.com. Her shop, Dead Girls Vintage features garments and treasures she has scoured the lands for. She is teaching fashion design courses to teens at the Evanston Art Center, where she will also be showcasing her design work.
