Fashion – Denver

\"It is a terrible thing to see and have no vision\"-Helen Keller. My first pocket belt came from Barcelona, and it wore a tag reading, \"Arkansas School for the Blind\" Although I can see quite perfectly I realized after wearing this first belt in 2006 that I also needed my hands to be free while experiencing all that my new city of Denver had to offer, especially the music scene. My realization led to my newest vision, creating something fashionable that also had a function, and I made my first pocket belt out of a few small purses sewn to a belt. After several years of pocket belt making in fabric, my artwork has evolved into leather work. The joy of making the belt comes from not only the craft itself, but also from the search for the perfect leather, each with a story. I have made belts from such treasures as recycled purses and coats, couches, and an African snakeskin rug found at a thrift store. Making new wearable art from old items reminds us to use our resources in new ways and see things differently. This new perspective allows us to put down our bags, put our necessities in our pocket belts, and open our hands. Each belt is one of a kind to appeal to all the beautifully diverse people who want a belt that is uniquely theirs.
