We aim to produce pathos-driven works promoting local and independent artists and embracing unconventional venues. We believe theatre is an excellent vehicle for bringing truths to light and inspiring audiences to think about important issues.
The Last Act Theatre Company also strives to be a green company by using recycled and found items for set pieces and props and keeping paper advertising to minimum. The main catalyst in giving structure to this project was when Karen Alvarado, one of the five founding members, read an article in The Austin Chronicle about a rape that occurred in an alley on a Saturday night on 6th St. It happened out in the open with a crowd of people watching, yet no one intervened on the victim’s behalf. This incident made Alvarado think about moments in life that define humanity; moments that force people to justify action as well as inaction. It also made her realize how performance can serve as a vehicle for bringing those moments to the surface and artistically compelling an audience to reflect on the aftermath. It was with this driving force in mind that in 2010, after accumulating a great deal of experience within the local theatre community, that the group, under the name @ Theatre Project, embarked on it’s first production, entitled Theatre du Grand Guignol, which ran Halloween weekend 2010 at The Hideout. The show was a success, garnering full houses for each performance and returning the group’s full investment in the production. It even earned a modest profit. Following this production, the group has renamed the company, held several meetings to name members and positions, drafted an official mission statement and begun pre-production for our next show, Upon a Midnight Dreary, a night of Edgar Allen Poe adaptations, which ran in July 2011.
This October, we celebrated our first birthday with a production of Titus Andronicus. This production was Business Manager Sara Billeaux's thesis project for her Master of Liberal Arts at St. Edward's University. The show was held at CTC International, with a portion of the proceeds benefitting CTC International and their efforts.
Last Act Theatre Company performed at RAW Austin's September showcase, Junction, with a piece choreographed by Andy Rodgers, Fight Choreographer for Titus Andronicus. The performance earned us a nomination for the RAWard for Best Performing Artist-Austin. Rodgers choreographed another piece for the RAWards event in November, which he performed along with actors Domenic Procaccini II and Paul Szent-Miklosy. Last Act Theatre Company is honored to have won the Performing Artist of the Year RAWard thanks to this performance.
We are currently in preproduction for our next show, Love in Pine, an original play written and directed by B. Iden Payne award winner Gary Jaffe. For more information about the show, and about Last Act in general, please visit www.lastacttheater.com.
