Morgan Twist

Visual Art – Philadelphia

Morgan Twist was born in Voorhees, New Jersey and attended Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Currently, Morgan creates ceramic sculpture in a studio at Crane Arts. While I only compulsively make pieces to sculptures, there are people in the world that struggle with much more self-destructive, addictive behaviors. The way many people view these behaviors, from eating disorders to drug problems, is that it is something the person can just stop doing at anytime. Addiction quickly becomes out of control, like fungus growing on a tree. Nature’s physical representation of something overtaking another mirrors the psychological struggle of someone consumed by an obsession or addiction. When everything feels out of control, you focus on something that you can control and end up with another obsession. I use repetition to create mass in my work to represent something growing larger, but in a controlled and calculated way. With art, you must come up with a visual language that can convey your idea through the material. I am interested in the difference between how the mind reads written language and how it processes art. Typing something takes minutes, but cutting out letters and piecing the words together takes much longer. I experiment with form and text, and how much time the viewer is willing to invest in reading the words. Through this process, I become intimate with the words and become more aware of what I am saying.
