It all started with a young child and some scissors... cutting up clothes and whatever else was available to make dolls clothes. Syreeta C probably got reprimanded, but not enough times to damper her passion. I was always an academic scholar, attending high school on a science and technology scholarship. I did a six week summer college program in fashion at Syracuse University in high school, and this is the "...and the rest was history" part of the story. I had found my soul mate, my passion and my love. I completed my BFA in Fashion Design, Magna Cum Laude at Syracuse University in May 2011.
I love fashion for it's expressive nature. Each piece is a sentence to my story as well as the story of whoever wears it. Each garment is attached to a moment in time and thus those memories and emotions.
The overarching theme with all that I do is how small parts combine to create a whole. Without a certain detail, the outcome isn’t exactly the same. That holds true for my garments as well as life in general. I’m obsessed with what makes people and pieces unique. Each experience shapes you and your story so you’re never the same as you were before. I created a few garments that had this triangle detailing that I spent hours upon hours cutting and embellishing by hand. Essentially, it was attached to simple silhouettes, so the detail held a great importance in the final product. In the same regard, my peers always playfully tease me about how I like to work with small pieces. I just love problem-solving on how I can work them together to create something where the sum of the parts is beautiful.
This theme covers design elements, construction details, how one garment fits into a collection, how a garment and fashion plays a role in someone’s life and thus their self-expression, and on and on and on.
