My name is Rachel Mosey - I am an art student/freelance artist in the greater Minneapolis, St. Paul, MN area.
I am a constant observer of my environment and surroundings, and I notice that there are a lot of subtle, simple, yet visually interesting effects placed around us- in things as seemingly simple as empty lots, cluttered alleys, old buildings with peeling paint, sunlight on open fields, shadows at sunset, the change of seasons, etc. They have an air of nostalgia to them that, I think, tends to be under appreciated.
Regarding my artistic process, I prefer not to limit myself in media and like to explore the variety: pencil/paint, photography, fashion, and film; though I do have a special interest in traditional drawing and painting. I work from my photographs most of the time, combined with unique fabrics/patterns/objects I find in thrift stores, 70s/80s style in fashion and homes, daydreams, detail, etc.
I strive for a photorealistic quality, enjoying the challenge and process of transferring a physical object/environment or photograph-into something created with a tool as simple as a pencil.
We're living in an age where efficiency and convenience kind of rule all, and I think there is something grounding in working in these generally slower artistic processes, like photorealism. I think they have the power to give the artwork, or subject within, greater appreciation.
