Designer Candice Janeen talks a bit about how she first got started and the inspiration for her works. See her fashions on the RAW runway at the next San Francisco showcase on Thursday, October 21st at Minna Gallery!

I moved to San Francisco from Washington State after graduating High School and fell in love with the city. I started my journey into sewing in 2006 by taking sewing classes at CCSF. The moment I laid hands on my sewing machine and made my first garment I was hooked! When I realized what I could do with needle and thread the possibilities were endless.
I have a genuine fascination with pop culture, nature and the arts. I use an “opposites attract” approach to choosing fabric by mixing things such as denim and satin. I enjoy bringing out the feminine beauty in utilitarian fabrics. I LOVE color the more the better, mixing prints or making my own by hand painting, dying, and embroidery. I make clothing that is unique, wearable, and easy to care for. My inspiration comes predominately comes from nature! I love being outdoors and am always amazed at the things I come across. It never seizes to amaze me the beauty and oddity of nature. I find great pleasure and joy in what I do and am so very thankful I can share my creativity with others!! I am always taken back a bit when I see a garment that was in my head become reality!! I create clothes that makes one feel happy because, I believe our clothing should make us feel good!
Taking care of the environment which provides so much of my inspiration is very important to me. I often uses recycled clothing to make my clothing, print all materials on post consumer recycled paper, and make garment tags using the small scraps of left over fabric.
