When I was young I was already hooked on things such as comics, movies, and the arts in general. I still draw greatly from those early memories. I remember one day I mentioned to an adult that I wanted to be an artist when I grew up. They told me that I wouldn’t make money until after I was dead. No malice was intended in their statement, just a not so subtle warning about the trials and tribulations that an artist was more than likely to face. Still I was obsessed over that statement and it made me realize two things about myself. First that I don’t like people telling me what to do with my life. Second that I really wanted to be an artist. To me it seemed that life in general was going to be fraught with challenges and obstacles no matter who you are or what you wanted to do. Peoples’ time in this world is finite, so one should pursue their dreams.
I completed my B.A. in studio art at Beloit college in Wisconsin and came back to Colorado to pursue my goals. My work to this day is still heavily inspired by science fiction and fantasy aspects that I use in my illustrations and comics. I work with a variety of media like graphite pencil, colored pencil, ink, acrylics, and various computer programs, but by far my favorite media to work in is watercolor. I feel that I have developed a unique style for my work but I’m still growing as an artist and I always look forward to doing my next piece.
