Omar Covarrubias

Performing Art – Los Angeles

For the past nine years, magician and comedian Omar Covarrubias has delighted audiences throughout the greater Los Angeles area. At nineteen, his fascination with the art of illusion compelled him to perform on the 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica. As a street performer, the magician learned to engage spectators from all walks of life. He attributes his current success to time spent performing his first tricks in the open-air. He fine-tuned his routine in these earlier days, prior to taking the show indoors. As Covarrubias quips, "there is no fourth wall on 3rd Street!” Over the years, Covarrubias appeared at open-mic nights and weekly magic events, such as Magic in the Valley. He traveled to Las Vegas to perform on the strip and continued entertaining at places like 3rd Street and farmers markets. As he further developed his style, Covarrubias segued from magic shows to the Los Angeles comedy circuit - a transition that was encouraged by Rudy Moreno, the "godfather" of Latin comedy. Moreno, who has hosted the Latin Comedy Showcase at the Ice House Comedy Club for twelve years, was highly impressed with Covarrubias' top-notch performance. "In all my years I have seen comedians, magic, and performers, no one has grabbed my attention like Omar Covarrubias," Moreno says. “His style and his down-to-earth likability is what captured not only mine, but the audience’s attention.” Soon after Moreno was exposed to the young magician, Covarrubias made his first appearances at the Ice House, Hollywood Laugh Factory, House of Blues, and other notable clubs. Covarrubias' routine is not traditional; he incorporates vaudevillian comedy and musical bits while calling forth constant audience participation. The versatile quality of his show allows him to appear in a variety of forums, including community festivals, fundraisers, and sideshow-type showcases. When Covarrubias appears at office parties or private events, the reaction is overwhelmingly favorable. He often brings his audience in on his jokes, only to surprise them moments later. The magician's warmth and charisma puts the crowd at ease, and expectations are increasingly surpassed as the show unfolds. All the while, Covarrubias' priority is to ensure that everyone enjoys the experience. "At a party, I always wanted to be the one to break the ice," he explains. "When people are staring at each other, I was the one to say, 'Come on guys, let's do something!' Similarly, my job as a performer is not done until everyone is smiling and laughing." The active and ambitious Covarrubias continues to appear throughout the Los Angeles area. As he prepares for the next show, he is always looking for unexpected opportunities and avenues to share his humor and magic. WWW.THEGREATOMAR.COM
