Shelley Watkins

Visual Art – San Diego

Shelley Watkins is an emerging mixed-media artist continually exploring new mediums to express her creative vision. As the daughter of a sculptor the desire to create was a strong force in her family and her life. Over the past 4 years her passion for mixed-media journaling has allowed her to study and learn from the best in the field including Orly Avineri and Daniel Essig. No matter what the medium; whether it be encaustic, inks, acrylic painting and assemblages, creating eco-dyed ephemera, hand-decorating old animal skulls, or making hand-crafted artist books, Shelley is drawn to re-purposing found materials that bring a depth, and mystery to her work. The old, broken, forgotten, and decayed are all inspiration in her prolific creative journey. Shelley’s wry sense of humor and love of anatomy can be found in much of her work where her joy is always in the process not the destination. As a member of San Diego Book Arts her work has appeared in numerous galleries and art shows including The Athenaeum Music & Arts Library in La Jolla, Ca. Shelley lives in San Diego, Ca and teaches workshops and classes throughout Southern California.
