Shurmmi

Visual Art – New York - Brooklyn

Shurmmi is a New York born artist of Bangladeshi descent. Primarily an illustrator who works with lines and seams. When she’s not drawing portraits and sewing her own designs, she’s an assistant/apprentice to an independent fashion designer in Brooklyn named Mel Simon. Shurmmi recently completed her education at the School of Visual Arts. There she went from cartooning to painting to silk screening and then finished her final year combining her love of illustration, patterns and fabric. During the last year 2014, she gave herself a challenge to draw something everyday. She began the year drawing in random styles and experimenting a lot. By the middle of the year after months of searching, Shurmmi finally found a subject and style she could identify with. Shurmmi was looking more into her culture of South Asia, the colors the fashion, the faces of the people. Her illustrations were shifting to focus more on intricate lines and hard flat colors. The simplest details in her portraits holds the most weight for her, whether that be a simple bindi, hijab, dark skin, brown eyes etc. This year Shurmmi plans to take her illustrations off of the paper and onto to body. She’s diving more into the fashion world, finding the balance that merges both her designs and silhouettes.
