Photography – Detroit

Hello everyone, my name is Sophia Adalaine Zhou. I'm a photographer, illustrator, multimedia designer, and also an independent artist, specializing in fine art photography and mixed media drawing. Through many of my photographic pieces, I explore conceptual and emotional portraiture. My work often combines surreality, serenity, and the solace found in natural solitude, giving the viewer a strange sense of disconcerting peace when gazing upon much of my photographic work. I find my greatest form of expression in using the intuitive realism of photography to create surreal and hyperreal images. I tend to unconventionally use human faces and forms to create my photos; I believe that the familiarity of one’s humanity can be used to help connect with the unfamiliar, thereby capturing fleeting moments of transcendence. Through many of my mixed media drawings, my meticulous attention to line-work and detail becomes a meditative, hybridized process. Similar to my photography, I like to incorporate human features and forms to create an unfamiliar sense of familiarity, allowing the viewer to share in my moments of surreal reflection and calm. I also enjoy the wide range of visual art in between, and like to experiment as much as possible. I admire both traditional and digital methods, and believe that hybrid methods create techniques of vast opportunity.
