Performing Art – Reno

I am a spoken word poet located in Reno, NV. for the last 8 years. Originally from Oklahoma. Moved around a lot. Mostly in the Midwest to Western United States. Went to high school in Hawaii. Graduated in 2001 and joined the Army directly after. Went to war, now I\'m a vet. I started writing poetry in the 5th grade when I wanted to tell this young lady that I liked her. My writing was of course trivial, but I got my point across. Poetry became my passion even after all the other distractions in life, sports, being a dumb kid, family issues and moving far too much. I believe I attended 10 plus schools in my before graduation. During high school I honed my craft and went to readings and wrote out my frustrations, accomplishment and visions through poetry. It became my most viable form of expression. While stationed in Georgia in the military, I regularly attended poetry open mics and slam competitions weekly and one a few here and there. I moved (back) to Reno in 2004 and joined the ranks of a few poets and in 2006 we started Spoken Views Collective (SVC) and have been holding spoken word open mics as wells as Slams and workshops in the area and participating in local and regional arts conferences in efforts to build, encourage and enhance the state of our local arts and culture scene. We\'re still here.
