Timothy Treadwell was a photographer, adventurer and educator. For 13 summers, he lived with wild grizzly bears and foxes in Katmai National Park and Preserve in Alaska.
In the late 90s Timothy Founded Grizzly People, a non-profit dedicated to the preservation of grizzly bears in Alaska and the lower 48 states. Through Grizzly People, Timothy sought to elevate the grizzly bear to the kindred state of the whale and dolphin in the hopes that humans would learn to live in peace with the bear and preserve their homes in the wild.
Each year after his summer expeditions, Timothy turned his photos into slide shows, and spoke all over the country to elementary school children, showing them the secret world of Alaskan wildlife. Through his presentations he inspired children to be good stewards of the planet, teaching them to respect and admire wild creatures and to foster the spirit of wilderness preservation.
In 2003, the bears he lived with killed Timothy, and his girlfriend Amie Huguenard. Timothy was the focus of the 2005 Werner Herzog documentary Grizzly Man, and the 2008 Animal Planet series The Grizzly Man Diaries. He left behind hundreds of hours of video and journals, and over 10,000 photographic images. Until now, his photos have never been publicly displayed.
