Aloysius Savant

Visual Art – Washington, D.C.

Hello. I go by Aloysius Savant when selling art, prose and comics. Aloysius --pronounced: Al·Oh·Wish·ous-- is the name I was given at birth; Savant is a self-applied and self-deprecating joke about the interchangeability of intelligence and foolishness (For example, In this bio, I plan to talk a deep game filled with philosophy and meaning but this bio will probably also have grammatical errors and a run-on sentence). I started my art career and art education in Rosslyn, VA at the Art Institute of Washington. From there, I transferred to Savannah College of Art and Design. While at these schools, I focused my education on learning to write for comics and animation. I studied at these schools with the goal to one day create a cartoon for Adult Swim and a comic for Marvel. I wasn’t expecting these schools to give me such a deep appreciation for and connection to Art History, Philosophy and Literature. For that, I will be forever grateful. These days, I create abstract paintings on canvas. I paint with magnets instead of brushes. I created a chemical process that turns calligraphy ink into Ferrofluid. It is retro art, a callback to the Abstract Expressionist movement which defined american art following World War II. We are no longer Post-Modern; Contemporary art is Meta-Modern. A central idea behind my art is to use abstraction to question Nihilism. I hope to convey that Nihilism (much like the Venom Symbiote) has attached itself to abstract art and it might not need to be the only lense we use to look at abstract work. I also work often to create pitches for various story driven institutions. My sketchbook is filled with ridiculous pitches to Cartoon Frederator, Awesome Inc, Darkhorse and Heavy Metal Magazine. I am currently working on a psychedelic science fiction themed Tarot deck. I haven’t yet received a green light, but no matter, I love crafting a good pitch. Prints of such artifacts will be available at my booth. To close, I guess I just want to say: It is great when someone stops and appreciates my art. It feels good to know that I have successfully shown beauty to another human being. There is, however, something even more rewarding. That is the joy that comes from a good conversation. If you have read this far into my bio, you are probably someone I want to meet. Please take the time to say hello. I have worked hard to show my passion in this bio and hopefully, I have mentioned something we have a shared passion for. I want to talk to you about it more than I want to sell you a decoration for your wall. And let me know if you figure it out: Am I an idiot pretending to be intelligent or an intelligent person who has convinced himself he is an idiot?
