Humans thrive on socially constructed ideologies, making it hard for diversity to break free. Unfortunately, the human race continues to force oppression on minority groups that do not fit the “norm”. Anything that deviates from the norm is deemed as “ugly”, but normality, ultimately, is only culturally defined. Physical differences between one another are only a matter of percetion, not genetics. As a matter of fact, we are 99.9% genetically similar. I am here to take a stance against normality. Art is grounded in culture, diversity, emotions, and individuality. Those with the ability to express an idea into a tangible form are at risk to expose their vulnerability. However, I take strength in exposing myself. Makeup and photography are my art mediums. They allow me to portray my individuality onto the human body- my canvas. As an artist, my goal is to represent people from all diverse backgrounds: race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, disabilities, cultures, etc... I want to integrate their past, present, and future onto the art work. In turn, this allows them to expose their inner self and outer environmental harmony with one another. By incorporating their intersectionalities, I can immortalize them in a single shot and introduce them to the world as who they are, not what they are. I advocate for cultural humility and ask you to join me in the stance against normality. There is not standard of beauty; you are the standard.
