Big Day Charles

Film – Chicago

Charles is currently living in Chicago and attending The School of the Art Institute of Chicago for Performance MFA. He previously did his BFA at Arizona State University. In his work, he has created personas and doppelgangers of himself. These characters are born because they fill a cavity and or express a part of himself that can be filtered into performances. These personalities are a way of helping him cope with his existence. By wearing his emotions on his skin during a performance I can capture true scenes of mental state. It is a way he objectively sees himself during the editing process, while letting the final product be viewed with the hopes of empathy and relatability from viewers. On various websites he is known as Big Day Charles. Using this user name as the manikin for other personas to emerge onto the Internet. By dressing in various costumes as characters, I can communicate to an X-audience the questioning of queer and self-identity as well as the intersection between live and produced performances. The Internet version, unlike the real Charles, can be manipulated, changed, and portray different emotion I could not necessarily do as regular Charles.
