Then my assistant, Anthony, took my hands and said,"You just did a fashion show."

"In LA FASHION WEEK." I breathed.

"In downtown LA."

"In a PENTHOUSE!"

"And LookbookLA was here!!"

"AND SHANE WEST!!"

....and then we began to scream. It would never have happened if it weren't for RAW.

Parris Harris:

When did you show at RAW?

Alicia Silk:

October 9th, 2009

Parris Harris:

Tell me about your RAW fashion show experiences ?

Alicia Silk:

I really don't know how to express this eloquently--the hair and make-up team were *incredible*, an awesome crowd came out (without my having to staple neon fliers to telephone poles); the pictures came out amaz--ing (and the photographer was devilishly handsome) and I got such great exposure....its an insane amount of planning, work, and stress to pull off a fashion how....and RAW made it almost easy. It was--no contest--the highlight of my whole year.

Parris Harris:

Why should you win 2009 "RAW" fashion designer of the year award?

Alicia Silk:

Because I AM RAW. I'm not being disingenuous; I truly am. I came out to California with all I owned in the world in two carry-on bags, a mere $100 in the bank, and 100% on my own....to become a *fashion designer*. Now here I am: nominated DESIGNER OF THE YEAR!!! Winning this award would be so much more than an honor--it would be validation for every time I couldn't afford electricity or food; validation for every time I sewed over my finger or cut my lip biting thread; validation for every time I've nearly passed out from exhaustion schlepping 20 lb.s (literally) of material all around the fabric district simply
because Michael Levines was selling it by the pound; validation for every date I've blown off because I needed to sew and every night I skipped sleep in order to meet deadlines. Winning this award will bolster me as an affirmation that yes, I am on the right track. Yes, dreams come true.

Parris Harris :

What will happen if you win the "Raw " Fashion award ?

Alicia Silk:

I'll undoubtedly burst into tears and Sally Field my way through my acceptance speech.

Parris Harris :

What will you do with the award. Where will u keep it ?

Alicia Silk:

The trophy is getting a special shelf above my sewing machine. So every time a needle breaks or the thread gets tangled on the bobbin--and I burstinto petulant tears of frustration and exhaustion--I'll look up at it and my head will re-inflate and I'll get back to the awesomeness that is Astoria (my clothing line). As for the award money, well I've been BROKE these past couple of months--and my friends have been there every step of the way, pulling me out of the house to get fresh air, giving
me pep talks and even doing a food drive for me and helping out with some bills. I think they all are long over-due for a drink....on ME for once.

Parris Harris :

Why should designers show at"RAW" ?

Alicia Silk:

A free venue, with a talented team, caring and Kick-ass staff, great exposure and incredible coverage? Raw is the Golden Ticket.

Parris Harris :

How Raw is your clothing ?

Alicia Silk:

I actually put an effort to make my line "Raw".  I did unfinished edges and tried to introduce new Silhouettes. The line was desert themed and I really wanted to evoke the spirit of a rustic, edgy yet fashion-forward man. Also, I tried to take the clothing beyond the confines of Urban Outfitter vs. Hugo Boss sort of mentality. And the concept of RAW is to introduce the New, right?
