Carmen Perez is an actress, singer/songwriter, and now painter. See her showcase her art work for the first time at the next Hollywood RAW showcase on Wednesday, April 28th at the Standard Hotel!

Tell us about yourself.
I’m a U.S. Army veteran, joined from Puerto Rico when I was 17 years old.  I’m also an actress, singer/songwriter with two songs that have been in the Billboard Dance & UK Commercial Pop Charts, with some acting credits. My biggest passion now is painting and working on my new music, which is more Latin influenced than the music I’ve recorded in the past.

How did you first get started in art?
I’ve always wanted to paint but just never dared to.  I was craving something and I wasn’t sure what it was until one day I just decided to go into an art supply store and buy some basic supplies.  I started painting August of 2009 and I haven’t been able to stop painting since!

From where do you draw inspiration for your work?
I draw inspiration literally from everything and anything that crosses my path.  It could be a smile from someone, watching the trees “dancing” with the wind, listening to music, the ocean, even the “not so fun” moments inspire me.

What do you love most about what you do?
I love everything about creating. With painting in particular, I feel completely safe to let it all out.  With other art forms like in acting and singing, I’ve held back a lot.  As you might be able to tell, I don’t hold back when I paint.  And I love it.  And what’s interesting is, recently I’ve been writing more music and my voice and music is sounding different.  I’m very excited about my next song, very Latin flavored…

What do you hope to leave your viewers with?
I hope my viewers get to go on a little fun journey when they look at my art and that they truly enjoy it.  I also wish to show the world that we never have to stop using our imagination, that it is fun to “go there”!

Are there any specific reoccurring themes or subjects that you explore and deal with most in your work?
I do paint from my subconscious without planning and what seems to be reoccurring in my art is sort of my version of “Wonderland.”

Any previous exhibitions/collaborations that you are most proud of?
This is my very first time showcasing my art and I’m very honored to be a part of RAW:artists!

Why showcase at RAW?
I noticed how much passion Heidi and the rest of her team at RAW have for what they do and I knew we would work well together to have a great, successful and fun showcase. They are great!

Favorite thing to do outside of making art?
I would love to travel more, and I’ve decided I’m going to start very soon.  I love hiking and being out in nature. I get inspired that way too.

Any current rising stars within the genre that you would recommend we look out for?
I really love the work of fellow RAW Artist Seth Balliett. I love Richard Winkler’s work as well.
