Carol Mac

Visual Art – Brisbane

Carol Mac experiments with the interplay of colour, texture and depth of surface to create illusory pictorial effects. Using the mediums of drawing and painting, her work explores the themes of light, space, abstraction, and the relationships between mark and image, light and materiality. This tension between the two-dimensional surface and the materiality of the medium creates a dynamic ambiguity between colour abstraction and the depiction of an indefinite space. Mac’s work constructs a space that appears both shallow and deep, implying an in-between state and a sense of tensioned balance. Carol Mac was born in Darra in 1989 and lives and works in Brisbane, Queensland. She completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts with first class Honours at the Queensland College of Art (QCA) at Southbank in 2012. Mac’s work has been exhibited at Redcliffe Art Gallery, Jugglers Art Space, Brisbane Powerhouse, QCA Galleries as well as Brunswick Street Gallery in Melbourne. She has been selected as a finalist for the Marie Ellis Prize for Drawing and the Brisbane Artist Run Initiative Festival. In addition, she has an upcoming group exhibition at Jugglers Art Space. The goal for her artistic practice is to present solo exhibitions both in Brisbane and interstate.
