Gavin Canning was born and raised in rural Newfoundland. He showed a strong interest in the arts form a young age which lead him to study Fine Arts, with a strong focus on Drawing and Painting at Concordia in Montreal. Gavin has travelled extensively though out Africa, Latin America and most recently Asia, working and volunteering in the field of education. His work is inspired by his exploration of arts and culture while living abroad.
As and artist I have always been interested in exploring the line between artist and artisan and mixing the traditional with modern. With my jewelry I take traditional Japanese origami patterns and translate them from paper to hand-folded fine silver embellished with gemstones and hand-painted oxidized patterns.
