Biography GARO (born Garo Hakimian) grew up and lives in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He has worked in the printing industry for 15 years while continuing to pursue his artistic aspirations. GARO did not become an artist by choice, he was born an artist. His late father, Razmik Hakimian, a big inspiration in his life and an avid art lover & collector, saw his son’s unique talent and handed him his first blank canvas and brush at the age of 3 and watched him create his first piece. Growing up, surrounded by art; he travelled and visited the studios of many of his father’s artist friends around the world would boost his creativity. He also finds inspiration from Picasso, Basquiat, Paul Guiragossian, Pierre Soulages, Arshile Gorky and Vahan Roumelian to name a few. He currently paints full time in his studio, creating big, bold, abstract works on canvas. He uses oil and acrylic paints, spray paints, oil sticks and anything he can get his hands on. When asked what his style is, he responds “Technique is a trap & style is a prison. I don’t like to put a limit or label on my work; as it can change every day.”
