Visual Art – Canberra

I combine mixed media with text to either tell a story of an event from the past, or use the words as means to highlight an observation or a fact. Working within a small scale invites the viewer to be drawn into the work. Sometimes obscuring the image with text means the viewer needs to look harder. Other works, which are larger, are prints assembled with collage. They too are a narrative of sorts and tell a story of fiction or fact. Well thought out words describing an event or feeling or sometimes text from a song, either way it isn’t often that an image is without words. In some ways my work has changed over the years, and in other ways I’m reflecting on work completed in the past. Some of those clunky techniques are now much easier with digital technology, and that in itself provides for a creative freedom, which for me means that things don’t need to be so precious. Beyond the techniques, my work is now more honest and I’m braver in sharing my thoughts. I like that the work is more literal, and accessible to the viewer – in both medium and price. To me, my work isn’t overly tricky, or highbrow, but an honest depiction of my thoughts, ideas, feelings and life.
