Greg Hughes - Hughes Custom Art

Visual Art – Portland

I’m new to the Art World, however I’m not new to creating works of Art. Prior to August of 2016 I owned and operated a small construction business. I primarily worked remodeling older homes giving them updated bathrooms, kitchens, bedrooms and all living spaces with custom one of a kind upgrades. Completely gutting outdated bathrooms and installing new walking in showers with custom tile using mosaic glass, ceramic and slate tile. Gutting kitchens and installing new counters, sinks, cooking islands, bar areas and installing custom tile backsplashes, laminate and wood floors and fresh updated paint sceems. In August of 2016 I cantacted a rare and sometimes deadly syndrome called GBS or Guillian Beurae Syndrome. What this GBS does is it breaks all the nerves in the entire body and leaves behind broken unusable nerves that are then forced to grow themselves back together finding new pathways to allow the bodies central nervous system to work again. Starting at my feet and working uo to my neck I lost all my ability to move and over the course of about a week I became paralyzed from the neck down. During this process I died twice, once for only about a minute and a half the second time was for around 7 minutes which left me with a right side brain injury and I was put into a Doctor induced coma for 13 days. When I came out of the coma I was paralyzed still from the neck down and I was from that day forward a completely different person. I was more compassionate more understanding and a kinder gentler person than before. I was in rehabilitation for about 6 months learning how to eat write talk and move everything all over again. It was during this recovery that I learned what wonderful friends and family I had around me and that they were all praying for my recovery. After leaving rehab I was in need of a Cain to help me walk when I would eventually learn how to walk again. Since I couldn’t build and remodel home any longer I decided that I would try and make Cain’s to give to patients like myself or disabled in some way that required the use of a Cain or walking stick. As time progressed I felt the urge to try new ways to occupy my time and branched out and got into fractal art and then into Acrylic Painting. And now I have several different ways to keep myself busy and my mind focused on the positive things I can do instead of focusing on all the many things I couldn’t do any longer. It’s been a 2 1/2 year journey that still has many highs and lows associated with it, however I’m alive and if I can help someone with a custom built Cain or put a smile on a face with one of my paintings then it’s been a journey I’ll never regret taking.
