Visual Art – Chicago

There's a certain desire to escape from the city; to leave behind, if all for a brief second, the glass, metal and stone. I am from a small island in the Caribbean, approximately 6.8 miles off the coast of Venezuela. Growing up in Trinidad, there was so much green, so much nature. With a deep breath, the energy of your surroundings completely engulfed you and you could feel your mind and body slip slowly into ease. That is what I want my art to invoke. I am an illustrator, textile designer and a documenter of my surroundings. I pull from my blurry memories the wild, untamed environments that I would find myself in and try to compress it onto a flat piece of paper or fabric. Naturally, the result is never how I envisioned it, but a tamed version: well thought out and strategically placed, like a city. I like to think of myself as a documenter of nature, but in reality, I just draw plants.
