When I gaze into window displays, scroll through Instagram adds, and view products I’m advertised, I find they are not relatable because they are not rooted in sincerity and concept. They care neither about humanity or values related to social justice. My dream is to create work that empowers humans, tells their stories, and encourages them, rather than diminish or destroy. I seek to make art, experiences, and products that attract authentic people who are interested in bettering others and the world. For myself, I have used my artwork to heal from my past in an unapologetic and honest way. I learned from a very young age that life is not fair. I don’t mean for this to sound extremely depressing, there just are simply things out of our control. I can’t explain why horrible things have happened to me, I can’t explain why horrible things happen to anyone. But what I do know is there is always hope. And I have chosen to cling to that idea, by finding strength within vulnerability, and valuing letting go. I am not asking people view my pieces and expect them to instantly feel “better”, I am asking them to believe in the possibility of change. We are ultimately only in control of ourselves. I have been given this opportunity of life, and even though, yes, it can be hard, unfair, and painful, it is also beautiful and promising. I myself am trying to focus on the things I can be thankful for and put my energy to good use. I think the first step in finding this inner strength to be thankful for simply being alive, is to let go of the things that burden you.
