Visual Art – Washington, D.C.

I am a contemporary artist and student who wishes to allow the raw surfaces of my brushes, knives, paints, clay and fingertips to create works that bring humor to my own fears and prejudices against functionality. I wish to let my materials create work with little help from me. I fancy discovering accidental color mixtures and the raw appearance of a blatantly obvious brush stroke arouses me to a point that I cannot communicate. When working in ceramics, I intentionally and unintentionally leave fingerprints, bumps, and stray tool markings in the clay. When I touch a pen to paper or my fingertips to canvas, I close my eyes. I do all of this to stay out of my own way. I aspire to embody the experimental technique, texture, and working processes of Joseph Marioni and John Henry Twatchman but to be as vulgar and hilarious as Marcel Duchamp and Tracey Emin in my conceptuality. And still, I wish to be honest. Blog: shaynabp.wordpress.com Twitter: @shaynabp Facebook: facebook.com/ShaynaBP
