Ulla Laidlaw

Film – Vancouver

Ulla is an independent filmmaker, theatre director, and dramaturge whose work explores poetic representations of a person’s solo journey towards transformation. Most recently, her short films Here Comes the Rain and That No One May Know My Suffering screened at the Jasper Short Film Festival and Vancouver Alternative Fashion Week (respectively), and she completed a screen adaptation of the theatre production Under the Overpass, with support from the Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto (LIFT). She has worked as a theatre director (Harry Gibson’s adaptation of Irvine Welsh’s Trainspotting – Rumble Theatre’s Tremors Program, Elyne Quan’s Souvenirs of Home – SummerWorks Performance Festival, The MT Space), a concept and art director for Obsidian Theatre and Native Earth Performing Arts, and as a Dramaturg for The Hunger- Uncanny House, a performance installation integrating architecture, sound design, bread art, and dance, which was funded by the Canada Council. Trained at the University of Guelph in Theatre and Psychology, Ulla has contributed to social action and community theatre initiatives in Canada and Thailand, applying her skills as a director and facilitator to work with newcomers and refugees, women\'s groups, student groups, and social workers, with particular focus on the process of creation, examining shared experiences, and exploring identity. Ulla also directs and produces videos for not-for-profit organizations and charities. She is currently in development for a music video for Randall Savoie\'s \"Chariots of Gold.\"
