Alison Samantha Johnson

Beauty – Baltimore

Raised in Southern Maryland, Alison began her theatre career as a teenager after joining the theater department and spent every afternoon and weekend in the school's old auditorium rehearsing, painting sets, coordinating costumes and practicing stage makeup. Upon graduating high school Alison began taking art classes at her local community college. A wonderful art professor took interest and said "You need to keep doing what you're doing but you need to do it someplace else!" Deciding to take a leap and find a way to mix art and theatre, Alison applied to the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. She was accepted into the brand new program for Theater Design and Technology, a class of only 12 students. At UArts Alison experienced the real world of art, the business of theater and the truth of independence. In and outside of college she began making friends in modeling, film and photography and from there continued to practice makeup design. Student films led to short films in festivals which also lead to working with independent films that have landed on Netflix. Alison graduated as part of the very first class to receive a BFA in Theater Design and Technology from the University of the Arts in 2008. Following graduation was non-stop whirlwind of designing in theaters around the city, with multiple photographers and models, while also working in wardrobe & wig styling gigs around Philly. In the summer of 2010, she relocated to the greater Washington DC area and began taking wardrobe jobs at theaters such as: Signature, Shakespeare and Arena. While slowly gaining speed and getting to know the DMV theatre community, she has designed numerous productions in the Capitol Fringe Fest which soon lead to other companies such as The Creative Cauldron, Red Branch Theatre, Ally Theatre Company, The Keegan Theatre and Synetic Theatre. For the past four years, Alison has been serving as a Costume Design mentor to the Signature in the Schools program combining costume and makeup as a skill for young artists interested in Theatre Arts. Currently Alison is the Head of Wardrobe at Signature Theater in Arlington,VA and freelance designing ALL OVER THE DMV!
