Road to Runway: KM Collective

Published in RAW Features

HOW DID YOU FIRST GET YOUR START AS A DESIGNER?

I have an interesting start actually.  I started customizing sneakers in high school. When I graduated, I went to American University where I built my business on the college campus. I moved onto graphic-tees and came back to New York. While in New York, I worked for designer Anne Bowen [for four years]. While working as Head Designer, I got my degree attending night school at FIT. I started my line KIMBO on the side as well. The newest line,
KM Collective, is a higher-end line, which I am very proud of.  Everything I do has a graphic side fused with a sleek design from both of my backgrounds.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR DESIGN AESTHETIC?

High-end design fused with a little street style.  I love to experiment with fabric techniques.  I love fusing graffiti elements into everything I do.  I believe since I have two polar opposite backgrounds, I bring something new and innovative to the table.

IF THERE WAS ONE EMOTION YOU WERE AIMING TO CONVEY THROUGH YOUR DESIGNS, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY THAT WOULD BE?

It's not bad to be bold and daring, and that it's all in the details.

WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE IS THE FORCE IN YOUR LIFE THAT HAS SPURRED YOU ON TO PURSUE A PASSION THAT IS BECOMING INCREASINGLY MORE DIFFICULT TO SUCCEED IN?

Creativity. I came to the conclusion that if I can't work on my own passion and creativity, I'm not happy.  The constant struggle and the every growing difficulty makes it exciting and a little scary.

I have learned it takes a lot more than being talented. There are so many other elements that go into the hustle.
